From nuclear power plants in Poland to transformative motorways in Serbia and North Macedonia, Bechtel is at the forefront of Europe’s infrastructure evolution. With a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and local collaboration, the global engineering giant is driving economic growth and energy security across the continent.
Bechtel, a global leader in engineering and construction, has been instrumental in shaping Europe’s infrastructure landscape for decades. From pioneering energy projects to constructing advanced transportation networks, Bechtel’s commitment to innovation and excellence is evident across the continent.
Advancements in Nuclear Energy
In recent years, Bechtel has significantly contributed to Europe’s energy sector, particularly in nuclear power. In Poland, Bechtel, in partnership with Westinghouse Electric Company, is set to construct the country’s first nuclear power plant. This landmark project, located in the Choczewo commune in Pomerania, will feature the advanced AP1000® reactors, aiming to deliver 3 GW of clean energy upon completion. The Polish government has allocated 60 billion zloty to fund this initiative, underscoring its commitment to energy security and environmental sustainability. The project is poised to generate substantial economic benefits, including the creation of tens of thousands of jobs during its construction phase.
Similarly, in the Czech Republic, Bechtel and Westinghouse have submitted a proposal to supply up to four AP1000® reactors at the Dukovany and Temelín nuclear sites. This initiative aims to bolster the Czech Republic’s energy independence and support its clean energy transition. The collaboration emphasizes the utilization of local suppliers, ensuring that Czech companies play a significant role in the project’s execution.
Transforming Transportation Infrastructure
Beyond energy, Bechtel has made remarkable strides in enhancing Europe’s transportation infrastructure. In Serbia, the company, in partnership with ENKA, is constructing the Morava Corridor Motorway. This 112-kilometer dual carriageway connects the cities of Kruševac and Vrnjačka Banja, serving as a vital link between central Serbia and the Pan-European Corridors 10 and 11. As of December 2024, the project reached a significant milestone with the opening of an additional 30 kilometers, marking the completion of approximately 50% of the motorway. This development is expected to halve travel times, stimulate economic growth, and attract increased investment to the region.
In North Macedonia, Bechtel and ENKA have been selected to build two new motorways as part of Corridors 8 and 10d. Corridor 8 is an east-west route connecting the Adriatic and Black Seas through Albania, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria, while Corridor 10d is a crucial segment of the Pan-European Transport Corridor 10. These projects, totaling 110 kilometers, are slated to commence construction in 2023 and are anticipated to enhance regional connectivity and economic development.
Commitment to Local Collaboration and Sustainability
A cornerstone of Bechtel’s approach in Europe is its dedication to collaborating with local industries and communities. In the Czech Republic, Bechtel and Westinghouse have signed a cooperation agreement with the Czech Power Industry Alliance. This partnership aims to leverage the expertise of Czech companies in deploying AP1000® reactors, ensuring that local suppliers are integral to the nation’s nuclear energy expansion.
In the United Kingdom, Bechtel has been selected by Urenco to support the expansion of the Tails Management Facility in Capenhurst, England. This facility plays a pivotal role in processing uranium tails, contributing to the UK’s strategy to enhance energy security and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Bechtel’s involvement underscores its commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions in collaboration with local partners.
A Legacy of Engineering Excellence
Bechtel’s history in Europe is marked by numerous landmark projects that have left an indelible mark on the continent’s infrastructure. From the construction of the Channel Tunnel, which revolutionized transportation between the UK and France, to the development of the Athens Metro in preparation for the 2004 Olympics, Bechtel’s projects have consistently exemplified engineering prowess and a commitment to improving quality of life.
As Europe continues to evolve, Bechtel remains a steadfast partner, dedicated to delivering projects that drive economic growth, enhance connectivity, and promote sustainability across the continent.
