Ghanaian carrier takes delivery of its first larger Embraer aircraft as it looks to increase capacity and strengthen its regional network
Africa World Airlines has taken delivery of its first Embraer E190, marking a new stage in the airline’s fleet development as it looks to expand capacity across its regional network.
A Larger Aircraft Joins the Fleet
The 102 seat aircraft, registered 9G-FDA, arrived at Kotoka International Airport in Accra on 19 September following its journey from China.
The E190 represents a significant addition to a fleet that has traditionally centred on 50 seat Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft. Its arrival gives Africa World Airlines the ability to carry substantially more passengers on individual services while retaining the flexibility associated with regional aircraft.
Supporting Regional Growth
With more than twice the passenger capacity of the ERJ-145, the E190 provides the airline with an opportunity to increase capacity on existing routes without immediately moving into larger Airbus or Boeing aircraft.
The arrival forms part of wider fleet development plans, with additional larger Embraer aircraft potentially supporting future expansion. The move could provide greater flexibility as Africa World Airlines develops its presence across Ghana and neighbouring West African markets.
Strengthening Connectivity
Africa World Airlines has operated since 2012 and has built its network around regional connectivity. The introduction of the E190 therefore represents an important development as the airline responds to passenger demand and looks to strengthen its operations.
For regional carriers, aircraft such as the E190 can offer a balance between passenger capacity and operational flexibility. This can be particularly relevant in developing aviation markets, where airlines are looking to grow networks while making effective use of existing airport infrastructure.
From China to Ghana
The new aircraft completed a multi-stage journey from Haikou to Accra, travelling through Urumqi, Astana, Yerevan and Tunis before arriving in Ghana.
Its arrival at Kotoka International Airport marks the beginning of a new chapter for Africa World Airlines, adding greater capacity to its fleet and giving the carrier another platform from which to develop its regional operations.
A New Phase for Africa World Airlines
The addition of the E190 reflects the continued development of Ghana’s aviation sector and the wider growth opportunities across West Africa.
With its first larger Embraer aircraft now part of the fleet, Africa World Airlines has increased its capacity and opened up further possibilities for regional network development.
