French rail-industry giant Alstom has announced a major expansion of its operations in Morocco, investing 100 million dirhams (around USD 10 million) to strengthen its industrial footprint and diversify its production capabilities. The move will cement Morocco’s growing role in Alstom’s international supply chain and support the Kingdom’s ambition to become a key rail-technology hub.
At the heart of the investment is the creation of the world’s first dedicated, multi-platform production line for train driver desks at Alstom’s existing industrial site in Fès. This cutting-edge facility will serve global rail projects, positioning Morocco as a strategic centre for specialised rail manufacturing.
Building Local Expertise and Creating Jobs
The new project is expected to generate more than 200 direct jobs, strengthening Morocco’s railway industrial ecosystem and bolstering the local economy. In addition to the production line, Alstom plans to open a development and engineering office in Fès, enhancing local engineering expertise and supporting innovation across the Africa, Middle East and Central Asia (AMECA) region.
The investment is part of a broader industrial development initiative that also includes plans to double production capacity for transformers — another key rail component already manufactured at the Fès site.
Morocco’s Strategic Role in Alstom’s Global Network
Alstom’s presence in Morocco spans nearly a century and has played a pivotal role in the development of the country’s rail infrastructure. The company has delivered notable projects, including supplying Citadis trams to Rabat and Casablanca, providing Avelia Euroduplex high-speed trains for Morocco’s Tangier–Casablanca line, and producing Prima locomotives for regional networks.
Since 2020, Alstom has invested nearly 200 million dirhams to develop its Fès facility, including establishing Morocco’s first transformer production line. This long-term commitment has transformed the region into a competitive industrial base, with a growing workforce and multiple rail-related projects under its belt.
Strengthening Regional and Global Impact
For Alstom, the expansion in Morocco supports a dual strategy: tapping into local engineering talent while enhancing the company’s ability to deliver strategic industrial solutions worldwide. As part of the AMECA region’s development strategy, the new production line will enable Morocco to supply specialised components to Alstom projects across the globe, reinforcing the company’s footprint in critical markets.
The project also aligns with Morocco’s broader ambitions to develop a modern rail industry and attract international investment in high-tech manufacturing.
Looking Ahead
Alstom’s investment marks a significant milestone in Morocco’s emergence as a rail-technology hub. By focusing on innovation, workforce development and specialised manufacturing, the company is strengthening not only its own supply chain resilience but also Morocco’s status as a key partner in the global rail industry.
The new investment reinforces Alstom’s commitment to sustainable, high-value development in North Africa and demonstrates the strategic importance of the region in the company’s long-term industrial plans. The expanded operations in Fès will help position Morocco as a centre of excellence in the railway sector for years to come.
