Bayer has announced plans to invest $2.2 billion in a new pharmaceutical manufacturing site in New Albany, Ohio, marking a major expansion of its US manufacturing footprint.
The multi-year investment is set to create around 600 high-value jobs once operational, while approximately 1,500 construction jobs are expected to be generated during the development of the new facility.
The project forms part of Bayer’s long-term growth strategy in the United States, following more than $7 billion in pharmaceutical research, development and manufacturing expenditure across the country over the past five years.
A New Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Campus
The planned site will be located within the New Albany International Business Park and is being designed as a flexible, modular campus combining drug substance and drug product manufacturing.
Bayer plans to incorporate advanced digital and automation technologies throughout the facility, creating a modern manufacturing operation capable of supporting its growing pharmaceutical portfolio.
The initial focus will include medicines in areas such as oncology, cardiovascular care and renal care, helping Bayer respond to growing demand in the United States and international markets.
Construction To Create 1,500 Jobs
The development is expected to provide a significant boost to the local construction sector, with around 1,500 construction jobs forecast during the building phase.
Once completed, the site is expected to create approximately 600 high-value permanent positions, bringing additional skilled employment to the New Albany area.
The project will also contribute to wider economic development within Ohio, while strengthening Bayer’s presence in the US pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.
First Module Planned For 2031
Construction of the campus will be delivered in stages, with Bayer planning a modular approach that allows the site to expand alongside future manufacturing requirements.
The first module, dedicated to drug substance manufacturing, is expected to become operational in 2031. A second module focused on drug product manufacturing is planned to follow in 2034.
The new Ohio facility will complement Bayer’s existing pharmaceutical operations across the United States, including its headquarters in Whippany, New Jersey, alongside sites in Pittsburgh, Berkeley, Cambridge, Research Triangle Park and San Diego.
Advanced Technology And Automation
Technology will play an important role in the new facility, with Bayer planning to use advanced digital systems and automation to support pharmaceutical production.
The company also intends for the Ohio site to become part of a wider US collaboration ecosystem, connecting academic innovation with advanced manufacturing expertise.
The aim is to create a more future-ready pharmaceutical production network while strengthening the resilience and reliability of Bayer’s global product supply.
A Major US Investment
The $2.2 billion development represents another significant investment by Bayer in the United States and reinforces the importance of the country to its pharmaceutical business.
With construction expected to generate around 1,500 jobs and the completed site set to support approximately 600 highly skilled positions, the new campus is expected to have a lasting economic impact on New Albany and the wider Ohio region.
