Copper Becomes A Major Growth Driver
BHP’s shift towards copper is beginning to deliver significant results, with the world’s largest miner benefiting from strong prices and growing demand for the metal.
Copper accounted for just over half of BHP’s adjusted EBITDA of almost $33 billion for the year to June 2026, putting the metal ahead of iron ore as an increasingly important contributor to the company’s financial performance.
The results highlight how BHP’s copper growth strategy is changing the shape of its business, as the company looks to take advantage of rising demand for a metal that is essential to modern infrastructure.
Production Pipeline Expands
BHP is preparing for a substantial increase in copper production over the coming years. Its capital expenditure programme is expected to deliver a 40 per cent increase in attributable copper production between 2027 and 2035.
Large projects including Jansen and Escondida are expected to play an important role in this expansion, while BHP anticipates free cash flow could grow by 150 per cent during the same period.
The scale of the planned expansion demonstrates the company’s confidence in the long term outlook for copper and its ability to support future growth.
Copper Demand Continues To Rise
Copper has become increasingly important to the global economy because of its widespread use in electricity networks, technology infrastructure and data centres.
As investment in digital infrastructure continues, demand for the metal is expected to remain an important consideration for businesses and investors across the mining and technology sectors.
For BHP, this creates an opportunity to build on its position as the world’s largest copper producer while developing new sources of long term growth.
A Stronger Outlook For BHP
Investor confidence in BHP’s potential has also increased. The company’s enterprise value relative to EBITDA has roughly doubled since 2022, reaching around eight times.
Although major mining projects can involve significant costs and operational challenges, BHP’s growing copper pipeline is increasingly attracting attention.
With copper playing a vital role in the development of energy and technology infrastructure, BHP’s strategy reflects a wider shift across the mining industry towards resources expected to remain essential to the global economy.
