Italy is stepping up its investment in clean energy with a new green and bio-hydrogen auction programme worth €400 million a year.
The initiative, announced on 11 August 2026, will use competitive auctions to support hydrogen producers, with successful projects set to benefit from contracts lasting up to 15 years. The programme is designed to provide greater certainty for businesses investing in hydrogen production while helping accelerate the development of Italy’s low-carbon energy sector.
The move comes as governments and energy companies look to expand alternatives to fossil fuels and develop new sources of clean energy for industry and transport. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable electricity, is increasingly viewed as an important part of the wider energy transition, particularly for sectors where direct electrification can be challenging.
Italy’s funding commitment also highlights the growing role of long-term investment in developing emerging energy technologies. By providing a clearer route to market, the auction scheme could help encourage new projects and private-sector participation across the hydrogen industry.
The announcement adds to wider momentum across the renewable energy sector. Global energy transition investment reached a record $2.3 trillion in 2025, according to BloombergNEF, while renewable power generation is continuing to expand rapidly in 2026.
For Italy, the new programme represents another step towards building a more diversified and lower-carbon energy system, while creating opportunities for businesses developing hydrogen technologies, infrastructure and production capacity.
