As the European Union advances towards climate neutrality, hydrogen and its derivatives, including ammonia and methanol, are key energy carriers for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors such as industry, refining and transport. This role is reflected in EU policy frameworks, including the EU Hydrogen Strategy and the REPowerEU Plan.
However, market deployment remains uneven. Renewable hydrogen is unlikely to meet industrial demand at scale in the near to medium term, making low-carbon hydrogen a necessary complement, yet it continues to face regulatory uncertainty and limited access to support under EU frameworks.
These challenges are addressed at DECARBON 2026 through a focused discussion on EU regulatory and market frameworks and their impact on industrial competitiveness and security of supply.
Within this discussion, Camilla Montemurro, Policy Advisor at Eurogas, focuses on Europe’s ability to secure an affordable and competitive hydrogen supply as part of the climate-neutral transition. Her presentation reviews the current EU regulatory approach, highlights key constraints and gaps and outlines practical recommendations to create a more enabling framework for scaling hydrogen deployment.
The session also features industry experts who contribute technological, project and value chain perspectives:
- Ray Fletcher, Engineer (CTO) at Alléo Energy, presents approaches to low-cost cellulose-to-hydrogen conversion;
- Pedro Medina, Hydrogen Technology Manager at Moeve, shares insights on hydrogen technology development;
- Fabio Ferrari, Circular Carbon and Integration Solutions Head of Department at NextChem, introduces the company’s Catalytic Partial Oxidation technology as a key building block for low-carbon hydrogen production;
- Martin Kardos, Green Hydrogen Project Manager at MOL Group, discusses green hydrogen value chain development in the CEE region;
- Valeria Vignolo, Head of Engineering and Investment Execution at Italgas Reti, talks about enabling the energy transition through hydrogen-ready gas infrastructure.
Join the Congress to engage in informed discussion, exchange perspectives and contribute to the development of practical approaches to low-carbon energy in Europe on 9-10 February 2026 in Vösendorf, Austria: https://sh.bgs.group/3tj
