In Ghana’s Ashanti region, the Obuasi mine remains one of Africa’s most significant and enduring mining operations. With a rich history dating back to 1897, Obuasi has long been a major contributor to Ghana’s economy. AngloGold Ashanti, which took over operations in 2004, has breathed new life into the mine through substantial investments in technology, safety, and sustainability. The mine operates as one of the world’s largest underground gold mining facilities, reaching depths of up to 1,500 meters. Today, Obuasi employs over 4,400 people and continues to play a key role in securing Ghana’s position as one of Africa’s top gold producers. The ongoing commitment to responsible mining practices and infrastructure improvements ensures that Obuasi remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic future.
