Subtitle: The British biopharmaceutical company is establishing a new manufacturing hub in the United States, creating more than 300 jobs and strengthening its research and development capabilities.
GSK is investing more than $800 million (£600 million) to expand its operations in Upper Merion Township, Pennsylvania, as the British biopharmaceutical company continues to strengthen its US manufacturing and research capabilities.
The investment will establish a new biopharmaceutical manufacturing hub bringing together production, research and development, and advanced digital technologies at a single site. The project is expected to create more than 300 jobs over the next five years while retaining 4,500 existing positions.
A New Hub for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
The planned expansion will transform GSK’s existing Upper Merion site into a more integrated centre for pharmaceutical production and innovation.
The company intends to replace existing buildings with enhanced facilities designed to support the development and manufacture of future medicines. These will include a dedicated quality control laboratory and a pilot plant for technology and process development.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the new facilities expected to strengthen the company’s ability to develop and supply medicines for patients.
Regis Simard, GSK’s global supply chain president, said the investment in additional commercial and research and development manufacturing, supported by advanced digital capabilities, would help accelerate the development and supply of future medicines.
Supporting Jobs and Economic Growth
Alongside its investment in new facilities, GSK’s expansion is expected to deliver a significant boost to employment in Montgomery County.
The project is forecast to create more than 300 jobs over five years, spanning manufacturing and associated technical and research activities. It will also help secure 4,500 existing jobs connected to the company’s operations.
Pennsylvania officials have welcomed the investment as part of wider efforts to strengthen the state’s life sciences sector and attract further advanced manufacturing projects.
The development is also expected to be eligible for state tax incentives through programmes supporting manufacturing innovation and investment. The precise value of any benefits has not been disclosed.
Building on GSK’s US Investment Strategy
The latest announcement follows another major commitment by GSK in Pennsylvania in October 2024, when the company pledged $800 million to expand its manufacturing and research and development operations in Lancaster County. That project created 200 jobs and represented a significant investment in the company’s US production network.
GSK has since outlined plans to invest $30 billion in its US supply chain infrastructure and research and development capabilities through 2030.
The company’s continued investment reflects the importance of expanding manufacturing capacity, strengthening supply chains and developing the facilities needed to support future medicines and vaccines.
With its latest Pennsylvania expansion, GSK is reinforcing its presence in one of the United States’ established life sciences regions while bringing manufacturing, scientific development and digital capabilities closer together.
Strengthening the Future of Medicine
As pharmaceutical companies continue to invest in advanced production and research facilities, GSK’s latest project highlights the growing importance of manufacturing infrastructure in the development and supply of medicines.
The new Upper Merion hub is expected to support the company’s future production requirements while contributing to local employment and the wider life sciences economy.
With construction scheduled to begin in 2027, the investment marks another significant step in GSK’s long-term US expansion strategy.
